Ex-Orlando Pirates flop signs for First Division rookies
A former Orlando Pirates flop has secured a move to newly promoted Motsepe Foundation Championship side MM Platinum, famously known as La Masia.
According to FarPost, Augustine Mahlonoko has signed a one-year deal with La Masia who were impressed with him in the few weeks he spent training with them.
Mahlonoko, a Pirates development graduate, spent the 2020-21 season with Baroka but he failed to make an impact, and he was loaned out to Pretoria Callies.
The 20-year-old attacking midfielder now has a career lifeline to start afresh as a footballer, and perhaps use the lessons learnt from his four years as a professional.
Mahlonoko joins La Masia after deciding against signing with Black Leopards who also showed interest in him after training with them.
The Vaal-born midfielder first burst onto the scene as a 16-year-old when Pirates handed him a first team contract but he couldn’t handle the fame as he struggled with off-field issues.

“He signed a one-year deal with La Masia on Friday after a few weeks of training with them. Before that, he caught the interest of Black Leopards, but he was not happy to move to Thohoyandou. That’s when he ended up at La Masia,” a source told FARPost.
