Sri Lanka’s Parliament Elects New President

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka—Ranil Wickremesinghe, a political veteran and six-time prime minister, was elected Sri Lanka’s president by Parliament Wednesday, as the country seeks to chart its exit from its economic and social turmoil.

But Mr. Wickremesinghe remains widely unpopular among Sri Lanka’s protest movement, who see him as closely aligned with former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who they had fought to oust for months.
